SDS Masterclass: How to Prevent Therapist Burnout – Improving Staff Engagement and Service Outcomes through Supervision and Positive Management with Dr Andrew Beck, BABCP President.
A practical one-day course full of useful action points and ideas for supervisors and managers to use to make an immediate difference for their supervisees.
There are no quick fixes in our current environment with major organisational and client pressures. However there are clear strategies for supervisors to use which are helpful, plus pitfalls to avoid.
The day splits into two parts: Organisational issues which managers can influence and which supervisors can highlight and supervision processes which can be used to identify and rectify burnout.
This course is applicable to both private and employed supervisors/supervisees.
Issues covered include:
- Identifying the signs of burnout, including the less obvious ones
- The overlap between therapist burnout, depression and clinical anxiety. Do you know the difference?
- The negative impact of burnout on client work and organisational performance
- Helping supervisees develop Active/Control roles to combat burnout
- The differential impact of job content, values conflict, effort-reward balance and role clarity
- How working hours influence burnout – do you know the most common cut-off point for therapists?
- The burnout effect of telephone vs face-to-face work – which is worse?
- Using supervision to move from stress to positive engagement and satisfaction
- Why the opportunity to offload is important but not enough
- How early maladaptive schemas may lead certain therapists to be both more vulnerable or more resilient in the face of work stress
- How you can identify and address individual risk factors in supervision
- How to use the supervisee’s ‘Zone of Proximal Development’ to improve their resilience
- When does a supervisee need to address their burnout through therapy rather than supervision?
